Summary The hiring salary for this position is $41,301.39 annually. Charles County Government is seeking a dynamic Meter Technician to perform routine field and office clerical work in the installation, reading, and maintenance of water meters, visit homes, and places of business to install meters, locate and record meter readings, and maintain meters.
Essential Job Functions - Uses County provided vehicle to visit locations throughout the County to install, read, and maintain meters.
- Locates meters, removes meter covers as necessary and records readings in handheld computer by either interrogating the meter or manually entering in the reading.
- Uses vehicle-mounted computer for meter readings.
- Disconnects service when required.
- Reconnects service when instructed to do so.
- Locates valves with the use of a metal detector.
- Follows up on complaints, visiting sites to investigate problem.
- Reports any water theft to supervisor.
- Puts notices on doors when directed.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Education and Experience: High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). One (1) year of outside work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license.
Special Requirements/Qualifications: Subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours of work.
Subject to call back in emergencies.
May work in confined space areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Knowledge of hand and power tools used in the work.
- Knowledge of Charles County roads and subdivisions.
- Knowledge of computers
- Knowledge of plumbing and construction practices.
- Ability to turn off and on water valves.
- Ability to lift and move meter covers.
- Ability to exhibit customer service skills, follow specific instructions and procedures and refer nonstandard situations or problems to supervisor.
- Ability to locate and read meters and accurately record readings in a handheld computer.
- Ability to lift meter covers and perform equivalent physical effort.
- Ability to use hand and power tools.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with state and local traffic laws and regulations.
Additional Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is regularly active with periods of medium exertion. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 100 pounds; climb stairs; bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; feel the size, shape, and temperature of items; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Principal duties of this job are performed in a general office; in shop or field settings and outside environment and exposed to inclement weather.
